The Sandy Hook Ski Club has been inundated by flood water after the Burnett River broke its banks at Sandy Hook late on Friday afternoon.

Ski Club members crowded around the club on Friday afternoon, taking in the devastating sight they’ve been faced with once again after spending nine years rebuilding the interior after it was inundated in 2011 and 2013.

Ski Club president Travis Patterson said members were hard at work on Friday moving things to higher ground.

“We got all the expensive things out and moved everything up,” he said.

“It is sad to see water go through there, we’re going to have to pay for a lot and get it back to how it was again.”

Travis said seeing the clubhouse go under brought back painful memories after the club lost everything during the last flood event.

“In 2011, floods wrecked everything and the club spent a lot of money through grants and our own money and made the club great again and really nice,” he said.

“A couple of years later, it was flooded again and it was worse. It completely destroyed the club and we had to start from scratch.

“In ‘11 it went up to the top storey, in ‘13 it took the whole roof off and we were basically left with the bare shell and only the brick work.”

Travis said it took nine years to rebuild, and it was devastating to see the first few inches of water creeep through the bottom storey of the clubhouse.

“It’s only few inches through the bottom storey, a big clean up still,” he said.

“Over the last couple of months, the waters have risen and receded pretty quick, but this is the quickest it’s come up out of the last few floods.

“It’d be a shame for it to come up anymore now because it’ll really wreck things.”

The boat ramp is completely underwater and the undercover picnic tables are almost completely inundated.

The club was forced to cancel this weekend’s ski club events due to the flooding.

“We had our three lane challenge, it’s our inner club thing. We get a lot of competitors try to promote it to get more members to our club,” he said.

“Obviously we had to can that today.

“This morning it was all a go-ahead.”
