More than a dozen businesses will feature in Bundaberg’s very own Monopoly board, with limited collector’s editions to be released in August.

The historic town of Bundaberg is known for many things; cane, rum and within a matter of months the most recognisable board game in the world.

Bundaberg has featured on previous monopoly boards, but for the first time this year will be the focus of an entire board.

The 59-year-old Playhouse Theatre is just one of many Bundaberg icons which will feature in a square on the iconic board.

Theatre artistic director Bex Hutchins said it was a “no-brainer” to accept the offer from Hasbro, and while the board will not officially be announced for release until August, the theatre is hoping to begin fundraising.

The theatre will receive 500 copies of the board to sell for fundraising purposes, and already has a waitlist for interested buyers.

Funds raised will go into renovations at the decades-old and well-known theatre.

“We decided to jump on the board as a major fundraising event for the theatre,” Mrs Hutchins said.

“By selling the board we will net a profit and plan to put that profit into renovating the auditorium theatres, a massive financial undertaking.”

Mrs Hutchins said the process has been “surreal” and that it was an honour to be included in Bundaberg’s own Monopoly board.

“Getting to play a board from home is a sweet, nostalgic gesture to the community,” she said.

“Most people keep their board games for a number of years, so I think it will be passed down, and that in itself is also special.”

“It’s really going to highlight just what our region has to offer.”

The board will be accompanied by a popular card game Top Trumps, also focused on the Bundaberg region, its history and trivia.

The Playhouse Theatre is just one of many local businesses, farms and community staples which will feature on the board, with more information will be released in the coming months.
