Wests Panthers coach Corey Tanner was philosophical in defeat as his team lost for the first time this season in the 4BU/HITZ FM Bundaberg Rugby League.

The Panthers were edged out in an 18-16 thriller by Past Brothers at Salter Oval, Bundaberg, on Saturday, with Matt Craven kicking the winning goal in the final seconds of the clash.

The win means Brothers remain the only unbeaten side in the competition, taking three victories from three games to start the 2023 campaign.

The lead changed hands a few times in the tight encounter before Craven’s deciding kick broke Panthers’ hearts as the game looked to be heading for golden point.

Despite defeat, Tanner said he was happy with his side’s performance.

“The penalty count was about 11-1 in favour of Brothers and I felt like we had to defend for a lot of the first half,” he said.

Tanner, who will coach the Bundaberg Rugby League representative team at the 47th Battalion Carnival in Emerald on April 29 and 30, was proud of his team’s efforts, with Bruce Ikamanu, Villiami Molisi and Connor Yeats scoring tries, but singled out centre Israel Power and full-back Yeats.

“Israel probably solidified his spot in the rep side for the Battalion weekend with his performance,” Tanner said.

“He was strong in attack and defence.

“Connor was superb at full-back and made a number of returns coming off our try line.”

Mitchell Taylor, Thomas Cronk and Trae Morrice touched down for the Brothers.

In other games in the BRL, Easts defeated Hervey Bay Seagulls 50-0, while Waves Tigers beat Wallaroos 36-22 at Eskdale Park in Maryborough, with Ponipate Wailevu scoring a hat-trick of tries for the visitors.

The Panthers head to Maryborough on Saturday, April 22 to face the Wallaroos and Tanner said it would be a tough task to get back to winning ways.

“I know what to expect because we will be without eight players for one reason or another,” he said.

“The Wallaroos are always tough to beat on their home track and this game will be no different.”

In the Northern Districts Rugby League round three, Isis Devils continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 40-0 win over Gin Gin Hawks at Gin Gin Sports club with Ben Buczma and Zac Dann scoring try doubles.

South Kolan Sharks defeated Avondale Tigers 48-10 at the same venue, with Ratu Raikutu scoring a hat-trick and Phil Lindsay touching down twice.
