Bundaberg radio station Hitz 93.9 celebrates 30 years of radio

Hitz 93.9 radio has been a staple of the Bundaberg community and as it celebrates its 30th birthday a long term host has revealed the highs, lows and what’s changed.

The radio station is known for its bright, fun attitude and providing up-to-date news and information.

One of the voices who many in Bundaberg hear during their morning commutes or breakfast started her radio career as a receptionist.

Tracey Sergiacomi of Hitz 93.9 morning breakfast show Matty and Trace has reflected on her years behind the mic at the popular radio station as it celebrates 30 years.

After being employed to man the desks in a reception role 15 years ago, Mrs Sergiacomi has risen through the ranks to host her own morning show alongside co-host Matty.

“Years and years ago they’d be sitting in the studio and putting an actual album on the turntable, playing that and then getting the next album,” she said.

“These days it’s all on the computer in front of you, so I think it’s a lot easier these days.”

Mrs Sergiacomi said it was not all tunes and laughs, particularly in 2013 during Bundaberg’s horror floods.

“We’ve never experienced anything like it before,” she said.

“So many homes, businesses were impacted and people lost everything they had, we had people sleeping at the station.”

Mrs Sergiacomi recalls the team working around the clock to keep residents up-to-date with road closures, flood levels, emergency assistance and evacuation information.

“I think out of everything that has happened in the past 15 years, that is the real big standout,” she said.

When speaking on the joy she has found in the role, Mrs Sergiacomi said her favourite part of the job was giving away prizes.

“That’s one of my favourite parts of it, and keeping locals up-to-date with all the events happening in Bundaberg,” she said.

With the station celebrating its three decades Mrs Sergiacomi said she was proud of the team and was looking forward to many more successful years.

“People could listen to other music platforms, but people listen to radio to see what’s happening in their town and listen for the announcers point of view,” she said.

Hitz 93.9 will celebrate with a birthday bash at Bundy Bowl and Leisure from 8am-11am Sunday, April 2.
