A community organisation which represents hope in these tough times has had its funding doubled.

Bundaberg and Districts Neighbourhood Centre scored $106,220 in this weeks state budget and the funds are set to expand its ability to provide services and support to locals.

The centre connects roughly 10,000 people a year to regional support programs for those affected by domestic violence, mental health, or financial difficulties.

Bundaberg Neighbourhood Centre Manager Corrie McColl told the NewsMail the centre had “become the heart of Bundaberg”.

“We pride ourselves in being a community focused organisation that does its best to help the community,” Mr McColl said

“Many people contact us because they don’t know where to go, they don’t know who to turn to in time of need.

“What we do is connect them with the support that they need to move forward.”

COVID-19 has had an impact on the ability of the centre to perform some of its regular services and Mr McColl said the grant would programs to return to a sense of normality.

This financial boost will be put to use from July 1.

It will also allow the centre to meet operational costs with more flexibility for expansion into other programs.

Member for Bundaberg Tom Smith said the boost would double the centres’ current funding.

“I’m sure this news will be welcomed by the hardworking staff and volunteers at our local

centre, along with the wider community,” he said.

Additional funding will also allow the refurbishment of the top floor of the centre to become wheelchair accessible with an elevator set to be installed.

The local boost accounted for the lion’s share of $115.8 million over four years for neighbourhood and community centres across Queensland.
