Preliminary work has started on construction of the multimillion-dollar roundabout at the Hughes Road and Blain Street intersection at Bargara.
Residents have been notified that traffic closures, delays and disruptions are expected over the next few months.
Early work involves the construction and relocation of multiple services and utilities before the civil works, including the roundabout itself, can begin.
Bundaberg councillor Larine-Statham Blair said while the work might cause temporary inconveniences like road closures, they were “essential to ensuring the long-term safety and efficiency of the Hughes Road and Blain Street intersection”.
The road is expected to reopen in time for Christmas, before closing again in the early months of 2025 for the civil construction phase.
Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout, and local businesses will remain accessible via detours.
Completion is expected by mid-2025, pending weather.
The roundabout works are estimated to cost about $4.1 million and form part of a broader program of improvements to enhance road safety and improve capacity of Hughes Road.
The project is partly funded by the Australian Government under the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.
