MEMBER for Bundaberg Jack Dempsey is calling for information to be available to backpackers before they enter Australia so they know their rights.

His comments follow extensive allegations in the News-Mail of unreasonable working and living conditions for travellers working on the region’s farms.

“What we need is a system where people are educated on their rights and the responsibilities of hostels and farm operators while in the country,” he said.

“It should start before they even get here, with an information website and then booklets available as soon as they arrive.”

Mr Dempsey said he hoped the idea would deter unscrupulous operators from trying to take advantage of unsuspecting travellers.

“If people are given this information right from the start, then the industry will have to accommodate these rights and responsibilities,” he said.

“It’s the lack of knowledge that is making these people accept the treatment they are getting. They don’t know any better.”

Mr Dempsey is concerned about the damage caused by illegal operators.

“It’s affecting the entire region’s agriculture, horticulture and tourism industries,” he said.

“If people are committing offences, they need to have the full force of justice brought down on them.”

Mr Dempsey said tackling the issue would require the co-operation of all levels of government and their departments.

“We need to work together to stop the treatment of travellers in not only Bundaberg, but all of Australia,” he said.

The local member said he was concerned shonky operators would damage the town’s tourism beyond repair.

He also pointed out cashed-up tourists visiting Bundaberg should not be barred from hostels simply because they did not want to work.
