THE aftermath of an artistic attack adorned the entrance to the Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery yesterday after the building was “yarnbombed” in the early hours.

A group which identified itself as Bundy Knit on a knitted flag hung from two giant knitting needles decorated the gallery’s entrance with woollen wonders.

While most passers-by described the work as “creative and fun”, Bundaberg Regional Council had a different opinion.

Councillor Judy Peters said the council did not approve of the work.

“They shouldn’t have done what they’ve done,” she said.

“I think it’s a shame they didn’t go into the gallery and talk about holding an exhibition or finding out the appropriate ways to do these things. I don’t approve because it’s not in conjunction with the gallery.”

Others did not share the councillor’s opinion.

Artist Bev Devlin said she thought the yarnbombing was fun. “I think it’s a wonderful free expression.

“It looks good and it’s nice to see something different.”

Another passer-by, Chris Keast, agreed.

“I don’t think it’s vandalism,” he said. “They’re just being artistic. It’s pretty fun.”

Carol Mark said she thought the effort was “a bit strange but it doesn’t seem like it’s hurting anyone”.

A note attached to one of the works read: “You’ve been yarnbombed. Happy WWKIP Week.”

WWKIP stands for World Wide Knit in Public, which takes place from the second Saturday to the third Sunday of June each year, making it a week-long celebration of knitting and other fibre arts.
