Alleged drug supplier arrested

A MAN who was allegedly caught with more than half a kilogram of marijuana withdrew his bail application in the Bundaberg Magistrates Court yesterday.

A MAN who was allegedly caught with more than half a kilogram of marijuana withdrew his bail application in the Bundaberg Magistrates Court yesterday after details of his extensive history were revealed.

Grant Thomas John Lobley, 38, was charged with three counts of drug-related offences including possessing and supplying dangerous drugs, after being arrested about 11.40pm on Tuesday night.

Bundaberg Police said they could smell marijuana when they approached Lobley in Maynard Street, where he was standing on the side of the road with a backpack and torch.

The court was told police found 518g of marijuana, clipseal bags, a set of scales, walkie-talkies and $2500 cash in the bag.

Lobley initially applied for bail, which police prosecutor Sergeant Robyn Shapcott opposed, saying his long history of drug-related offences did not favour him.

“Lobley has an extensive history in Queensland and a history over a very long period of time in Victoria,” Sgt Shapcott told the court.

“He is obviously not a garden-variety user if he had 518g on his person.”

Lobley had 11 similar offences on his Victorian record and an undisclosed number on his Queensland record.

Sgt Shapcott said there was a high likelihood that Lobley would reoffend if he was granted bail.

“At the time of the alleged offence, he was on bail for like-natured offences,” the police prosecutor said.

But duty lawyer Edwina Rowan said she had not been made aware of the offences and stood down to take further instruction from Lobley.

After a short adjournment, Ms Rowan said her client had instructed her to withdraw his earlier bail application.

Magistrate Neil Lavaring adjourned the matter for committal mention on July 12.
