Brisbane has gone barking mad for the ultimate family dog as new data reveals that labradors retrievers have topped the list as the river city’s most popular dog breed for 2021.

According to statistics from the Brisbane City Council 9,728 labradors were registered across the city throughout the month of October, over 2000 more than the second-most registered breed, Maltese.

Labrador breeder and owner of Sandwoodlabs Khylie Wood said that demand across the last two years has been “insane”.

“I had over 200 people fill out an application just to apply for a waitlist for my most recent litter of eight,” she said.

“That doesn’t include all of the people calling me and sending me messages, I have had hundreds of people wanting them.” 

Ms Wood attributes the city’s rise in puppy love to families stuck at home during lockdowns while simultaneously breeders slowing down due to Covid uncertainty.

Data shows that active dog registration across the city jumped 3.4 per cent from 2019 to 2020 from 106,977 to 110,431 and then by 0.94 per cent in 2021 to 111,471.

And as of September this year, Bracken Ridge comes out on top as the most loved-up pup suburb, with 2,365 registered dogs closely followed by Forest Lake at 2,259 and The Gap with 2,015.

Bella was the most popular dog name at 1,467 registered.

Ms Woods, who has been a labrador breeder for the last seven years, isn’t surprised that her favourite pooch came out on top.

“I know why everyone loves labradors, they are happy dogs.”
