BRISBANE’S Central Station is set to undergo a $67 million facelift so it can shed some of the shabbier parts of its exterior.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk described the design — which features glass walls and roofing, common to many public structures around the world — as “futuristic”.
The project is expected to support 750 jobs and rejuvenate the station and will involve the raising of platforms 1 to 4, to make them more accessible.
A new escalator could be installed to make it easier to get to ANZAC Square.
Central Station was built in 1889 and has not undergone any significant renovation since the 1990s.
“When you have a station that services some 140,000 people daily, when you do an upgrade like this there will be some disruptions to people’s experience - they’re not going to occur immediately,” Transport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said today.
“The main disruption will be the potential for passengers to have to board and alight from their trains from different platforms.
“We’ll minimise that disruption as much as possible.”
All platforms will also receive new floors, wall and roof coverings, better lighting and passenger displays.
