IT was popular with walkers, joggers and sightseers and now Brisbane's old Riverwalk is up for grabs for anyone interested in a 450 kilogram pontoon or kilometres of stainless steel.

While a new $72 million fixed New Farm Riverwalk is being built, Brisbane City Council is selling off the old 870 metre-long walkway that was damaged in the 2011 floods.

The 287 floating pontoons might be too big for those nostalgic about the old New Farm walkway, but auctioneers expect interest from marina developers.

James Rouse, state manager for Hymans valuers and auctioneers, which is selling the Riverwalk by tender, said the 1.7 kilometres of stainless handrails and balustrades were high marine grade.

The Riverwalk was designed to withstand impact from a log of up to two tonnes, according to a condition report prepared for the Council.

Mr Rouse said some sections of pontoons had crashed into the Gateway Bridge and were damaged in the high-velocity floods, while others survived intact and were dismantled.

"Generally speaking it's in remarkable condition, since some pieces went down the river and most were rounded up in Moreton Bay,'' Mr Rouse said.

Each 5.4-metre-wide pontoon is made of precast concrete with stainless steel reinforcing.

The 35 tonnes of stainless steel include handrails, posts and 20 kilometres of wire cable.

Two sections of gangway, made of steel truss with timber decking, also will be sold.

While the Riverwalk cost the city millions of dollars to construct, the sections of walkway, now stored at Pinkenba, could fetch hundreds of thousands of dollars, Mr Rouse said.

Tenders close at midday on September 4.

The new New Farm Riverwalk, which will be 850 metres long and link New Farm with the city's Howard Smith Wharves, is due to be completed by the middle of next year.
