A senior paramedic has spoken about seeing an eight-vehicle crash that injured 10 people unfold in front of her at a busy intersection on Brisbane’s northside.
Queensland Ambulance Service operations supervisor Hilary Piper said she was only about 30m behind when a large removalist truck and five other cars crashed at the corner of Webster Rd and Rode Rd, by the Prince Charles Hospital in Chermside West.
“It definitely was quite a chaotic scene,” she said.
“I actually happened to be about 30m behind the accident when it happened, so ideally as a supervisor, you arrive to give the crews a hand but I happened to be primary response to that one.
“So it was a little bit of a hairy moment there for a little while with all the patients.”
She said a 38-year-old man had to be cut from his car by fire fighters, with High Acuity Response Unit and critical care paramedics treating him on scene before he was rushed to the Princess Alexandra Hospital with “quite critical injuries”.
“He was trapped in the car, with quite significant damage to the vehicle, (for) probably close to 45 minutes to an hour prior to being extricated,” Ms Piper said.
“He was conscious and talking to us throughout.”
The driver of one of the vehicles involved said the scene he was faced with was “pretty intense”.
“I thought everyone was just slowing down as they approached the lights but then I was forced to slam on my brakes,” he said.
“I quickly looked in my rear vision mirror and then the last thing I remember was the airbags going off.”
Paramedics also took a man in his 40s, a woman in her 40s and a teenage boy to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, all in a stable condition.
A man in his 40s was taken to the Prince Charles Hospital in a stable condition and five other patients declined or didn’t require transport to hospital.
All inbound lanes were shut, with the crash site about 50m north of Rode Rd, before both northbound lanes were reopened by 2.40pm.
Police want to speak to anyone who saw - or who has dashcam vision of - the eight-car pile up.
Initial investigations suggest a truck driving south along Webster Rd collided with a red convertible as they approached the intersection of Rode Rd at Chermside West at 12.10pm.
The two vehicles then crashed into six other cars that were either stopped or coming to a stop at the traffic lights.
“Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the crash or have dashcam vision to come forward,” a statement released by police said.
The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
