BRISBANE’S worst road has been named and shamed as a hotspot for serious car crashes, in a report to be released today.
Gympie Rd is the worst in the city for common prangs. The 4.2km stretch through Chermside and Aspley has seen a “significant” increase in crashes in the past 12 months.
The research also shows nearly two-thirds of drivers get angry when they see others using phones while driving, but admit to doing it themselves.
According to the 2018 AAMI Crash Index, Gympie Rd is a repeat offender, appearing in the top five worst roads for several years.
“This year it has well and truly topped the list,” AAMI spokeswoman Alexandra Foley said. “It’s a busy stretch which carries a high volume of traffic to and from the northern suburbs and Sunshine Coast to the CBD, as well as heavier vehicles due to current infrastructure upgrades.”
Also in the top 10 accident-prone locations is Indooroopilly Shopping Centre at No 3, Sunnybank’s Mains Rd and Logan Rd at Mount Gravatt.
The AAMI report, which surveyed 1,255 drivers, said nearly two thirds or 67-per-cent of drivers said they become angry when they see others using phones while driving, but still admit to doing the same thing.
“Despite this, many drivers are still taking dangerous risks when they are behind the wheel with one in three (35 per cent) people admitting to texting while stopped at a traffic light and one in three people (31 per cent) admit to talking on the phone while holding the handset,” Ms Foley said.
Queensland’s Road Policing Command have previously told The Courier-Mail motorists should put their mobile phones in the boot to avoid temptation while driving.
“The younger generation seems to be most drawn to it. They can’t disconnect, Superintendent David Johnson said.
