Brisbane lockdown: Everything you need to know

What we know about the new COVID strain

Brisbane is in lockdown from 6pm Friday January 8 to 6pm Monday January 11. Here’s what you need to know.

Key points

- The Greater Brisbane area will be locked down between 6pm Friday and 6pm Monday.

- The lockdown will apply to the Brisbane, Redlands, Ipswich, Logan and Moreton Bay council areas.

- Wearing a mask will be mandatory outside of your place of residence.

- People will only be allowed to leave their home for essential purposes.

- There will be a limit of two visitors to homes.

- Anyone who has been in the Greater Brisbane area in recent days, but since left, is also being urged to isolate.

BRISBANE GOES INTO THREE-DAY LOCKDOWN

When can you leave your home?

- For essential education and work. People are being encouraged to work from home where possible.

- For healthcare or to support a vulnerable person.

- You can shop for essentials in your local area.

- You are allowed to exercise in your local neighbourhood with no more than one person from your household.

What are the new restrictions?

- 20 people can attend funerals.

- 10 people can go to weddings.

- Dancing and singing at weddings will be banned during lockdown.

- Masks to be worn in all places outside of your home, including workplaces.

- Can’t leave your home, unless it is for one of the designated reasons.

- People are being urged not to leave the Greater Brisbane area during this period.

- Officials are encouraging non-residents currently in Greater Brisbane to remain there until the end of the restriction period.

What will be closed?

- Cinemas

- Entertainment and recreation venues

- Gyms

- Places of worship

- Libraries

- Council golf courses

- Pools and aqua parks

- Community Halls

- Brisbane Botanic Gardens and Mt Coot-tha

- People are urged not to use dog parks of playgrounds

- Real Estate business and open homes

What will be open?

- Grocery stores

- Restaurants and cafes will only be allowed to do takeaway service

- Public transport will continue as normal

- Waste services, including residential bin collections, bin repairs and replacements will continue as normal

- Lifeblood blood donation centres

- Childcare

- Medical appointments such as doctors and physiotherapy

In what circumstances can I leave the lockdown area?

You can leave Greater Brisbane during the lockdown period if:

-you have an exemption from the Chief Health Officer;

-in emergency situations;

-if you entered the impacted area responding to an emergency as an emergency health services or emergency service worker or national defence, state security or police officer; or

-if required to allow an essential service to occur such as the transport of freight in and out of Greater Brisbane.

You can return to your home outside of Greater Brisbane but you must follow the same lockdown rules when you return home. Only leave your home for the essential reasons and wear a mask.

When do I have to wear a mask?

In the Greater Brisbane area, for the period of the lockdown, face masks must be worn at all times when you are outside of your home including in the following settings:

-shopping (retail, supermarkets and shopping centres)

-on public/shared transport and waiting areas for public/shared transport

-weddings and funerals

-while waiting for takeaway food

-at workplaces.

Children 12 years and under and people affected by a medical condition are exempt. You do not have to wear a mask at home.

You may temporarily remove your mask for eating and drinking and when necessary for your employment, for example, an early childhood educator may remove their mask when communicating with children in their care.

Can people transit through the lockdown area ie from Tweed Heads to the Sunshine Coast?

You can travel through the Greater Brisbane area to get from one destination to another, but you must do so without stopping. You also must travel in a private vehicle, such as your own car, a rideshare car or taxi. You must not transit through the Greater Brisbane area by any other mode of transport – i.e. public transport.
