HUNDREDS of tennis fans have been hit with fines during the 2019 Brisbane International tournament, with some complaining about inadequate signage.
New figures show parking inspectors dished out 327 fines to motorists during the one week event in January, including “zero dollar” warning notices.
Will Brisbane tennis fans cop reduced format of Brisbane International?
The council has defended the fining blitz, insisting that fines within the Queensland Tennis regulated parking area had halved over the past two years.
Among those fined was two motorists who complained about inadequate signage in the area, down from four the previous year.
Local Tennyson ward Councillor Nicole Johnson said misleading signage around the tennis centre meant visitors were being fined unfairly and residents were being inconvenienced by illegal parking.
“The signs must be fixed to ensure they are clear and meet their purpose of identifying the regulated parking area,” she said.
A council spokeswoman said the council had taken every opportunity to remind residents about the restrictions ahead of the event and insisted that their review of parking signage was behind the drop in fines.
“During the 2019 event Council received 11 complaints relating to parking in the Queensland Tennis Centre Parking Area,” she said.
“Council is committed to standing up for those residents who have been blocked from entering or leaving their properties, or prevented from parking on the street outside their properties, during the Brisbane International.”
The council claims there were signs displayed at every street entering the parking area, which reminded motorists about the one hour parking restrictions.
