A Brisbane couple have been searching almost 48 hours for their dog after she went missing on Sunday at the Spit on the Gold Coast.
Elissaundra Augusteyn and Sofia Hernandez, of Jindalee, were walking their two dogs Miaa and Javi underneath the jetty when Miaa got spooked and ran off into the bushes. She hasn’t been seen since.
Mrs Augusteyn said Javi was usually the one who wanders off, not Miaa.
“She just never leaves us so strange that she’s the one that’s gone missing,” Mrs Augusteyn said.
“It just happened so fast … we’re just extremely stressed”.
When Miaa ran off, Mrs Augusteyn said onlookers reacted immediately and tried to help them find her.
“We all should have found her,” she said.
“We’ve stayed here, we haven’t left, we’ve been walking around all night.”
Mrs Augusteyn said they put meat on a nearby barbecue to try to lure Mia our of the bushes but it was no use.
“We’ve done everything, we’ve gone right into scrub like in the middle of the high grass, despite our fear of snakes, and just jumped in to look for her,” she said.
“We’ve even got a drone out now to look”.
Mrs Augusteyn said a kind Samaritan volunteered to help them look using his drone’s infared heat detection technology.
“We’ve contacted Gold Coast City Council … but no-ones turned her in yet which is not a good sign,” she said.
Mrs Augusteyn said she thinks its possible Miaa could have been snatched but didn’t want to give up hope just yet.
The two Brisbane dog parents are trying to stay positive and have said they will pay a $500 reward if someone finds her.
“It just depends how much our GoFundMe receives but the reward could go right up to $6000,” Mrs Augusteyn said on Tuesday after another full day of searching.
“I’m probably not going to go work again tomorrow, my partner is going to see if she can grab her laptop and just work from home on the beach.
“We’ve both taken unpaid leave.
“I’m a carpenter for work so I haven’t been able to do my side business either.”
Mrs Augusteyn said they intend on staying all day and night again.
“We’ve done the whole track area again, walking from the Spit down to SeaWorld and close to Main Beach”.
Mrs Augusteyn said they’re both extremely grateful for all the kind people who have come to help them look.
She urged anyone with information about her missing 2-year-old Maltese Shih tzu to contact her through Facebook or Gold Coast City Council.
