Federal Government to unveil coronavirus stimulus package
It comes after the Federal Government wrote to councils in recent weeks asking them to list land transport projects for consideration that could be fast-tracked for early construction in the next three to six months.
Cr Schrinner said while giving direct financial relief to people during tough times was important, so too was the fast-tracking of projects.
“It gives the city lasting infrastructure in addition to driving jobs and injecting money into the local economy,” he said.
“The opportunity to bring forward projects in Brisbane and deliver long-lasting infrastructure and in turn create more than 850 jobs is something we are grateful for and take very seriously.
“Over the past two weeks we have been carefully assessing what projects will tackle congestion, improve safety and make Brisbane an even better place to live.”
Cr Schrinner said despite the Federal Government’s request for land transport infrastructure projects, he had also suggested funding for other initiatives such as community clubs.
This includes $50 million for grants to clubs as well as $35 million in funding for council owned facilities.
The Howard Smith Wharves and Southbank ferry terminals are also listed for consideration, with both projects worth about $13.5 million each.
Upgrades to Compton Rd, Gresham St Bridge, Ann and Creek St, as well as footpath widening around schools have also been listed for consideration.
“I look forward to hearing the outcome of our submission and working with the Federal Government to deliver critical projects that strengthen our economy,” Cr Schrinner said.
The council is seeking 100 per cent federal contributions for the projects. The submission does not guarantee all of the projects will be fast-tracked as part of the Federal Government’s stimulus package.
The Lord Mayor is currently running for election in the March 28 local government poll.
