Brisbane City Council approves $2.5m in rates relief for flood effected residents

More than 10,000 flood-affected residents have been approved for rates relief with the Brisbane Lord Mayor saying applications will only remain open for another fortnight.

Federal government has 'change of heart' over Qld flood relief package

Brisbane flood victims have been spared more than $2.5 million through rates relief following the devastating natural disaster earlier this year.

More than 10,000 residents have so far been approved for the $250 rates relief but Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the application remains open.

“This was the most devastating flood event Brisbane has ever experienced and this rates relief means residents and businesses will have extra money to rebuild and recover and get back on their feet quicker,” he said.

“The rates rebate means the average quarterly rates bill for flood victims after the $250 rebate is just $183.

“This flood recovery will take time, and I encourage anyone that was impacted and struggling to please get in touch with council.”

Queenslanders affected by the disaster can access rates relief until June 15 for the flooding event council revealed the bill will be up to three times greater than the 2011 flood.

“As we’ve recovered, we’ve approved $250 rates discounts for an average of 140 residents every single day,” Mr Schrinner said.

“In 2011, $1,923,000 in rates relief was provided to residents. The extent of relief offered in 2022 shows just how severe the most recent event was.

“As a council we are facing a flood damage bill of $330 million – three times more than the cost of 2011 – and direct assistance for flood-impacted property owners, community groups, sporting clubs and the rebuild of damaged and destroyed council assets is all part of that.”
