Music megastar Billie Eilish has opened up about her tribute to Bribie Island shark attack victim Charlize Zmuda during her final show in Brisbane.
Eilish performed an emotional rendition of ‘Everything I wanted’ in honour of the 17-year-old surf lifesaver in front of a sold out Brisbane Entertainment Centre on Saturday.
The nine-time Grammy Award winner behind hit songs ‘Ocean Eyes’ and ‘Birds of a Feather’ revealed in an interview with Matt Shirvington on Sunrise that she thought about that dedication all week prior to performing at her sold-out concerts in Brisbane.
“I didn’t want to believe that that was true,” Eilish told Sunrise.
“Then I saw a video, and it was all her friends together on this beach talking about her, and it was so touching and moving and then they talked about me, and I suddenly was like, ‘Oh my God’.
“I kind of didn’t know I was even part of it.
“I thought about it every day, all week, and then, yeah, of course, I wanted to dedicate that song to her and just bring her name to the show.
“OMG didn’t know I was part of it.
“I wanted to dedicate that song to her and just bring her name to the show.”
Sunrise host Matt Shirvington said he reached out to Zmuda’s parents Steve and Renee prior to his sit down interview with Eilish, asking them if he wanted to pass on a message on their behalf.
“Words cannot express how grateful we are for your Billie shout out to Charlize on Saturday night,” Shirvington said reading the message from Renee.
“Thank you for inspiring our girl and bringing so much joy with your music.”
