Campers have set a new world record at the Big Red Bash, doubling the previous world record set for the most people doing the Statue Dance in one location.
A total of 2754 dancers stood completely still for three seconds in the style of a flash dance mid-song. Narrowly missing breaking the Nutbush World Record set by the Mundi Mundi Bash last year, campers were still all smiles as they danced five minutes straight to Nutbush City Limits.
Rollerskaters Heidi Owen and Sofia Cherchyk were front row during the world record attempt, taking on the dance while wearing rollerskates.
“I was going to try it last year but I was too embarrassed,” Ms Owen said.
After convincing Ms Cherchyk to dance this year, she took her friend on an once in a lifetime road trip.
On how she thought she would do during the world record attempt, Ms Owen said the Nutbush dance is one of the first dances learned by Aussie rollerskaters.
“We should be okay, just maybe not be able to jump as high as everyone else when we do the crossover,” she said.
A camping group dedicated to bringing singer Delta Goodrem to the Big Red Bash danced to the song while wearing face masks representing the singer.
“We tried to take the big cutout of Delta Goodrem into the mosh pit yesterday but we were told she was a weapon, and rightly so,” one camper said.
Helen Taylor from The Australian Book of Records said she came up with the idea for the Statue Dance two years ago.
“I was thinking how wonderful it would be for a mass participation record for the statue dance,” she said.
“What better location to do it would be the Simpson Desert at the Big Red Bash. I love the statue dance because it doesn’t matter how old or young you are but it’s fun because everyone can do it.”
Over the three-day festival eight records set in previous years by Bashers were broken.
“We love that side of it because kids don’t give up, they’ll come back and keep trying,” she said.
“One child did it and ended up breaking the record. They were on top of the world.”
The Big Red Bash concludes tonight with a special Tina Turner tribute followed by a performance by Jon Stevens.
