Crane on loose pontoon threatens to fall into Brisbane River

Lifeguards are reminding people southeast Queensland beaches remain closed today after a large pontoon washed up on shore on the Sunshine Coast.

Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) Lifeguards spotted the pontoon washed ashore on Peregian Beach this morning.

Several pontoons were dislodged from their moorings and floated down the Brisbane River on Monday.

One of them, with a 150-tonne crane attached, resulted in the evacuation of the popular Howard Smith Wharves dining precinct near the city as it floated down the swollen, fast-moving river.

Posting to their Twitter account, SLSQ said lifeguards would continue to monitor the pontoon.

“They will continue to monitor obstruction in the water but ask people to keep clear of any debris on the beach,” they wrote.

“A reminder that the safest place to swim is between the red and yellow flags.”

All beaches and creeks on the Gold Coast and most on the Sunshine Coast remain closed️.

Members of SLSQ have completed more than 700 emergency evacuations in Brisbane this week.
