A B-double has rolled on its side and become wedged under a major Brisbane rail bridge shutting down a suburban road.

Motorists are urged to avoid Oxley Rd just after Martindale and Clewley Streets in Corinda after the truck collided with the Corinda rail bridge at 12.50pm.

Diversions will remain in place for several hours, with all lanes blocked inbound towards Sherwood.

The Corinda bridge was recently featured in the top five – coming in at number four – for most frequent rail strike bridges for the 2023/24 financial year, along with Logan Rd in Buranda, North Street in Willowburn, Bergin Street in Booval, and William Berry Drive / Visentin Rd connection in Morayfield.

A Queensland Fire Department spokeswoman said that the truck had partially rolled and one crew is at the scene assisting police.

“The truck had partially rolled, crews are working to clear a diesel spill caused by the truck,” a spokeswoman said.

It understood the driver of the vehicle was uninjured and was out of the truck when Queensland Ambulance paramedics arrived at the scene.

A Queensland Rail spokesman said four freight trains are currently delayed due to the bridge strike while no services on the Tennyson line were impacted.

“When there’s a bridge strike, rail traffic is halted, and our teams carefully inspect it to ensure it’s safe for trains to operate,’ a spokesman said.

This comes as the The Department of Transport and Main Roads launched a new campaign, with Queensland Rail (QR) aimed at tackling the alarming number of road and rail bridge strikes across Queensland.

The “truckload of trouble” campaign aimed to raise driver awareness of the consequences to drivers and other road users.

In the 2023/24 financial year there were 369 rail bridge or protection beam strikes recorded, with 360 the year before. In 2023 alone, bridge strikes caused more than 200 hours of rail delays.

“Bridge strikes are extremely disruptive. Recently we had a strike at Allan Terrace Corinda, which resulted in 103 train delays and 35 train cancellations, a Queensland Rail spokesman said.

“Queensland Rail is pleading with drivers of large vehicles, like trucks, caravans or loaded trailers, to plan their route, obey the road signs and signals and know their height.”
