A teenage Gold Coast soccer player who collapsed on the field after suffering a cardiac arrest has woken from a coma in hospital.
Ava Azzopardi, 14, collapsed seconds after running onto the field for Runaway Bay in the U15s girls grand final against Magic United at Surfers Paradise on Friday night.
She was rushed to Queensland Children’s Hospital in a critical condition.
But her family says Ava has now regained consciousness and is interacting with them.
“Ava has been conscious through the night and we have interacted with her!!” her relieved and delighted family said in a message through Runaway Bay girls coaching director Al Mucci.
“The doctors are starting to wake her up, her eyes are open and she’s been interacting with her wonderful family who have been by her bedside since Friday night.”
“There’s been some communication but it’s still early days.
“She’s not out of the woods yet - there’s still a long way to go for Ava.”
