Just when you thought the annual celebrations were over, Australia Day has rounded the corner once again.
While January 26 lands on a Sunday this year, the public holiday has been pushed to Monday, January 27, making a very nice long weekend to round out the first month of 2025.
Both Sunday and Monday could see different opening times across the state, but luckily we have broken down where you can and can’t visit.
Here is what is open on the Australia Day long weekend.
Shopping Centres

Supermarkets
Coles, Woolworths, Aldi and IGA are expected to be open, but may be open at reduced hours depending on individual stores and shopping centres. Customers are advised to plan in advance and check their local stores.
Post Offices
Post Offices are generally closed on national public holidays. Some Post Offices may be open depending on local arrangements. Make sure to double check your local branch before heading out.
As is usual for national public holidays, no local mail or parcel deliveries will take place, including Express post.
Bottle Shops
Liquorland, BWS and Dan Murphy’s may be open at reduced hours depending on individual stores and shopping centres. We recommend checking your local store for exact timings.
Public transport
On Monday, most bus, train, ferry and tram services in South East Queensland will run to a Sunday/public holiday timetable due to the Australia Day public holiday.
Banks
ANZ
All banks are closed on National public holidays and, accordingly, no payments are processed.
NAB
NAB Connect client centre closed. No processing will occur, except for Fast payments and Linked account transfers which process 24/7. Excludes Business Market Loans, Corporate Market Loans and Credit card transfers.
Commonwealth Bank
Closed all day.
St George
Closed all day.
Westpac
Closed all day
How will government payments be impacted?
Centrelink payments and reporting dates may change due to the upcoming public holiday.
Centrelink online accounts will show new reporting dates for the Australia Day reporting period.
Youth allowances, JobSeeker Payments, Special Benefit, Farm Household Allowances, Austudy and Status Resoltuion Support Services Payments will also be impacted.
Are essential services open in Brisbane?
Hospitals and police stations will remain open, though could be subject to lower staff numbers.
Council libraries will be open however might have differing hours on the Sunday and Monday.
Bin collections will continue across the city as usual.
