THE Airport Link tunnel has been a nightmare for Wooloowin resident Gerry Winter - and that was before his backyard caved in.

Mr Winter, 68, whose Lodge St house is above the Airport Link tunnel, awoke to a huge hole in his lawn yesterday.

"When I saw the hole I was shocked," Mr Winter said. "If it had happened under the house we would have been in very serious trouble.

"The whole thing has really been a nightmare with the dust, noise and unnatural light all night and now this."

Mr Winter registered a complaint with Brisconnections, who have treated the matter seriously. Investigators from Thiess John Holland, who are in charge of the project's design and construction, and tunnel managers were assessing the situation yesterday, but said they could not yet confirm whether the incident was caused by construction of the tunnel.

An independent investigation will be made next week.

A spokeswoman confirmed the tunnel runs under Mr Winter's property, where construction finished last November.
