The first coal has been struck at Queensland’s controversial Carmichael mines, Adani Australia has announced in a major milestone for the project.
The company’s mining arm, now known as Bravus, revealed on Thursday afternoon that it had struck thermal coal for the first time.
It comes nine months after the first pit was dug at the mine, located in the Galilee Basin in Central Queensland, in September last year.
Bravus chief executive David Boshoff said the mine was on track to export first coal in 2021, as promised.
Mr Boshoff said Bravus had already secured the market for the 10 million tonne per annum of coal produced at the Carmichael Mine.
“The coal will be sold at index pricing and we will not be engaging in transfer pricing practices, which means that all of our taxes and royalties will be paid here in Australia,” he said.
“India gets the energy they need and Australia gets the jobs and economic benefits in the process,” he said.
The Carmichael coal mine has been the lightning rod for anti-fossil fuel and environmental activists for years and was thrust into the national spotlight during the 2019 federal election.
It received its final approvals needed to break ground within days of the federal Labor’s 2019 election loss.
