Teen's huge barra catch in Logan River

A young fisherman has reeled in a “one in a million” gigantic barramundi from the Logan River this weekend.

Michael Short, 16, caught the fish in the Logan River using a soft lure, commonly known as soft plastics or softies.

Barramundi generally are only found as far south in Queensland as the Maroochy River on the Sunshine Coast, making the catch even more impressive and unlikely.

The 16-year-old shared the catch of a lifetime on his Instagram page, saying he “landed her solo” on light fishing gear.

“One in a million fish. Never thought the day would come that I’d land a fish like this, especially on bream gear haha.” Michael wrote.

The fish was 92cm long and was released by Michael after he took a few pictures.

“Safely released for someone else to experience what I just did,” he said.

The epic catch went viral on the Gold Coast Fishing Fanatics Facebook Group page when Michael’s dad, Russ Short published a photo of him holding the fish.

“Paul Cameron sent this pic in of his mate’s son caught this 92cm Barramundi yesterday from the bank of the Logan River with 10lb line and a Daiwa bait junkie soft plastic,” the post read.

Michael told The Courier Mail the catch was unexpected.

“I was so surprised I got it in, It was a miracle,” he said.

“It was crazy, I was fishing for about six hours before I got the hit.

“I was fishing with a four-inch baitjunkie (soft bait), slow winding along the bottom when the Barra smashed it.

“It straight away jumped out of the water and I was in for a fight.”

Michael said the fight lasted for about 15 minutes before the fish gave up.

“It was pulling me to the other side of the river and then I somehow turned it around, It was so much fun as it kept jumping”

“Slowly but surely I brang it in after about 15 minutes of fighting.”

Michael said he was surprised to catch a Barramundi in the Logan River.

“I don’t know anyone personally that caught barras down there. I’ve seen one or two Instagram posts, definitely nothing like this fish though.”

“It’s so good knowing I finally caught one.”

Associate Professor in the School of the Environment at the University of Queensland, Ian Tibbetts has praised Michael for releasing the mammoth fish.

“The key thing was that the young fisherman returned to the Logan River which is great to see, I would celebrate anybody doing that,” Professor Tibbetts said.

Professor Tibbetts said the number of fish species are moving further south due to the rising temperatures of the ocean.

“This is to be expected, barramundi develop in freshwater environments and then they migrate downstream to estuaries to breed. They also change sex during their lifetime.” Professor Tibbetts said.

“I’m not sure what the numbers are for barramundi in the Logan River but it’s probably a suitable system to support the barramundi population eventually,” he said.

“I would expect the numbers to increase with the rising sea temperature.”

Professor Tibbetts said the fish Michael caught was probably a female that could have been full of eggs.

“The larger the fish the more eggs it can carry, so he did well putting it back,” he said.

The Facebook post has received the well over 300 likes since it was posted on Sunday.
