A saltwater crocodile has been captured on camera devouring a marine snake before washing it down with a drink.
In a video posted to Facebook, the 2.7m female saltie can be seen struggling to chow down on a file snake in the Daintree River in Far North Queensland.
Tour guide David White, 58, who posted the short video to The Solar Whisper Daintree River Crocodile and Wildlife Cruises Facebook page on Wednesday, said it took the saltie, who he has dubbed Lizzie, about two hours to eat the snake.
“For anyone interested, File snakes, not other snakes, seem to take a long time to eat. I don’t know why, they are not that big but take a while to swallow this was over two hours,” he wrote underneath the video.
“And it’s the only meal I have ever seen that requires washing down with a drink.
“It is a rare thing to see a crocodile have a drink since they usually do it in the water. Though I can only make reference to crocs on this river system not sure if it’s the same elsewhere.”
The video shows Lizzie slowly glide up to the bank of the river before tourists on Mr White’s boat realised she had a snake in her mouth.
The giant reptile stays at the shores edge for a while, before deciding to climb onto the sand bank to continue to chow down on the snake.
“Look at Lizze. She’s eating,” Mr White can be heard saying in the video.
A lady in the background can be heard saying “She’s still munching” before Mr White adds “I think she’s swallowed it.”
Moments after Lizzie swallows the file snake, she leans her chin into the water and starts taking gulps of water.
“Having a little drink to wash the snake down,” Mr White says in the video.
“Saltwater crocodiles have glands on their tongues and they can filter out the salt.”
The Solar Whisper Daintree River Crocodile and Wildlife Cruises Facebook and Instagram pages have garnered a huge following thanks to stories Mr White posts under the guise of a crocodile soap opera he dubs “Days of the Daintree.”
The wildlife expert given the crocodile’s names, with 4.7m Scarface and another saltie dubbed Big Nick known to battle, while 3m long Scuter, Lizzie, Nate, Margaret and Dusty also often pop up in his photos and videos.
