A driver has been transported to hospital after sustaining burns when a car burst into flames on the Willowbank Raceway track on Friday afternoon during the Winternationals.
Footage obtained by Channel 7 shows the moment that fire broke out under the front of driver Rob Taylor’s car, quickly engulfing the front of the dragster as it speeds down the raceway.
Mr Taylor can be seen opening the door as the car screams down the raceway fully ablaze, his arm and leg visible outside the car after the door falls off.
The car eventually crashes into a concrete wall at the side of the track, where the vehicle disappears behind a wall of thick smoke and flames.
Onlookers raced to the scene, relieved when Mr Taylor rolled from the car and into the care of paramedics.
The vehicle has been totalled, with flames quickly engulfing it.
Mr Taylor was transferred to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a serious but stable condition with burns to his hands, face and legs.
The raceway is playing host to the Winternationals until June 12, with more than 500 cars expected to compete.
Willowbank Raceway was uncontactable on Friday night, although it is suspected that an issue with the fuel tank may have caused the fire.
