A family are mourning the loss of their young son who died just hours after being discharged from Logan Hospital.
Hiyaan Kapil’s family say that the five-year-old boy had been suffering stomach pains for several days when they made the decision to take him to Logan Hospital on Sunday night.
After waiting for four hours in the emergency room Hiyaan was discharged at 10pm and taken home, but was brought back by his father at midnight when he collapsed.
A family friend, Rajbir Gill, told Channel 9 that he received a message at around 2am telling him that Hiyaan, a student at Bethania Lutheran College, had died.
“He was very happy as a child. Always happy,” Mr Gill said.
“What happened? That’s the only question.”
Hiyaan had just started his first year of school, commencing prep at Bethania Lutheran College in February.
The Courier-Mail approached Queensland Health on Monday night and was told that an inquiry by Metro South Health was now underway.
Queensland police have confirmed that following standard procedure, a report on Hiyaan’s death will be prepared for the coroner.
Metro South Health on Tuesday confirmed that Hiyaan’s death will be the subject of a thorough review.
“Our hearts go out to the family of Hiyaan Kapil for their tragic loss and we extend our deepest sympathies to his parents, family and friends,” Metro South Health’s Acting Chief Operating Officer, Noelle Cridland said.
“Our clinicians are dedicated to providing the best possible care to all our patients.”
The Logan Hospital is assisting in the preparation of a report for the Coroner.
