Brisbane’s newest pedestrian bridge will open to the first 500 lucky ticketholders for a special sneak-peek before the sky lights up for Riverfire.
Five hundred Queenslanders will have the chance to be the first to walk the Neville Bonner Bridge, linking South Bank to Queen’s Wharf, when ticket registrations open at 7am on Monday.
The 500 ticketholders will be granted special access on September 2 in the hours leading up to the Brisbane Festival’s spectacular Riverfire opening night.
The 320m super structure will open to the public next April as part of the $3.6bn Queen’s Wharf casino and tourism precinct.
Acting Premier Steven Miles said while the bridge would open to the public in April, 500 people would get a chance to see it first.
“We thought it was a shame that Queenslanders couldn’t enjoy it sooner and so today we’re announcing that 500 lucky Queenslanders will be able to walk this brand new pedestrian bridge,” he said.
“It’s a historic moment for Brisbane, your kids will forever talk about the day they came in with mum and dad to see the brand new bridge.
“It’ll be the chance to be the first to be on Instagram, the first to have a selfie, the first to have the bridge on your TikTok, so it’s a very exciting opportunity for Queensland.”
From 7am an Eventbrite website will allow people to register for up to four tickets to walk the bridge.
“It’s just a taste of what’s to come for our wonderful city,” Mr Miles said.
Star Entertainment Group chief executive Robbie Cooke said the bridge would lead to
level four of the Queen’s Wharf resort, where 40 restaurants would be located.
The Neville Bonner Bridge, named in honour of Australia’s first federal indigenous parliamentarian, is expected to facilitate 10,000 pedestrian crossings each day when it opens in 2024.
