The title hasn’t yet been updated, but the rumour mill has been in overdrive about just who bought Queensland’s most expensive piece of real estate.

Mining tycoon Gina Rinehart is believed to be the buyer behind Queensland’s biggest ever residential sale.

The eye-watering $34 million sale at Sunshine Beach was first reported by The Courier Mail last month, with Australia’s richest person rumoured to be the buyer back then.

Land sales records for the beachfront property have not yet been updated, but numerous sources have since whispered that the Hancock Prospecting boss is the new owner.

The off-market sale of the fan-shaped house on a 2015sq m block was a huge win for the owners, Margie and Murray Charlton, who were weren’t even considering selling when the unbelievable offer was made to purchase.

Sources have told The Courier Mail that the billionaire businesswoman – a holiday regular on the Sunshine Coast during the pandemic – had initially been scoping out properties to rent.

The Sunshine Beach mega-deal blitzed previous records including $27 million paid off-market last year for a Gold Coast mansion on The Promenade, and the Brisbane record of $18.48 million at 1 Leopard St.

Noosa-based Tom Offermann Real Estate, which was widely believed to have handled the $34 million sale, declined to comment at the time of the jaw-dropping deal.

And like many high-net worth individuals, the billionaire often seals property deals under a veil of secrecy.

The mining magnate was also linked to another big ticket sale of almost $11 million at Noosa last year.

According to the AFR, the contemporary residence was bought by businessman Karl Wentzel and then quietly transferred to Dan Wade, the Western Australia-based general manager of business development at Hancock Prospecting.

Wade is also listed as the owner of a house on the same street as Rinehart’s sprawling riverfront estate in Brisbane.

Rinehart was named Australia’s richest citizen by Forbes, having built a fortune on the back of iron ore and cattle, and given the current high prices being paid for the resources commodity, there is no doubt plenty of cash to splash on real estate.
