One of Australia’s most spectacular — and expensive — holiday homes has returned to the market, this time with a circa $20 million price tag.
Mandalay House is available to rent for an eye-watering $20,000 a night, but its richlister owners, the Tartaks, have decided to put it up for sale as they find themselves spending increasingly more time on their Sydney business interests.
The Tartaks bought the Airlie Beach mansion for $14 million in 2017 and reportedly declined an offer to buy it for $25 million only months later.
The house was rented out by a “guest from America” for three days late in 2018, totalling $100,000.
That guest is believed to be none other than pop star Taylor Swift, who was touring Australia at the time.

Overlooking the Whitsunday coast, the Mediterranean-style trophy home took property developer Neil Murray more than three years to build and comes with a private helipad, marina, two-jet-ski docks and a boat shed.
The oceanfront home spans three opulent levels featuring six bedrooms, nine bathrooms, a five-car garage, a self-contained office with room for a secretary, a climate-controlled wine cellar with dining room, a gym, a cinema, and a fully self-contained caretaker’s cottage.
But the outdoor entertaining area is the standout, with a resort-style horizon pool interwoven with palm trees and a pavilion overlooking the Coral Sea.
The property has been listed for private sale through Ray White Whitsunday principal Mark Beale and Christie’s International’s Ken Jacobs.
This humble reporter was lucky enough to spend a night at the home when it was first listed for rent two years ago and I can confirm it is quite incredible.
Along with the enormous spa bath tub, sitting room, powder room and walk-in wardrobe, the master suite is bigger than my entire house at 144 sqm.
“It’s not until you actually see it for yourself, that you can truly appreciate it,” Mr Beale said.
“The location is never to be repeated and offers everything anyone could ever want with total privacy, your very own private marina, more than enough space for all friends and family and the blossoming Airlie Beach only a few minutes drive away.
“The new owners can fly into any of the three close airports in the region and within a short period of time be relaxing in their own home and enjoying what the Whitsundays has to offer.”
Ray White Whitsunday has been inundated with seachangers post-Covid, with more than a dozen $1 million-plus sales in the Airlie Beach market in the past six months.
The Whitsundays property ‘Chesapeake’ was sold last October by Hog’s Breath Cafe co-founder Don Algie for $6.5 million to horse racing personality, Alan Galloway.
“We are doing almost 100 per cent more sales compared to pre-Covid times last year and the numbers are just outstanding,” Mr Beale said.
“What we are finding is that people from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane who would normally be travelling overseas are saying ‘let’s go to Queensland’.
“Many buyers want a property up here that they can lease during the year and get holiday accommodation income then come up and stay with family friends for the holidays.
“They receive between $10,000 and $15,000 income a month and a beautiful property right on the water.”
