Panicked buyers desperate to snare a piece of Brisbane’s hot property market are gearing up for what is being described as the biggest auction weekend the city has ever seen.

A pre-Easter frenzy will result in one of the highest ever days of home auctions this Saturday with sellers rushing to market before the break and an unprecedented number of homes set to go under the hammer.

Brisbane has 117 auctions scheduled for this ‘Super Saturday’ — more than double the 50 on average it had lined up before the housing boom.

The Gold Coast has 36 homes going to auction this Saturday and the Sunshine Coast has 32.

Hot properties set to sell under the hammer include a quirky 1960s Mater Prize Home in Tarragindi, Australia’s most viewed house in Gumdale and a deceased estate in one of the Gold Coast’s most exclusive streets.

Place Estate Agents chief auctioneer Peter Burgin said the company had around 50 homes going to auction over what he claimed would be “definitely Brisbane’s biggest auction weekend”.

“It’s going to be an exciting weekend,” Mr Burgin said. “I think there’s going to be a lot of people out and about on Saturday and Sunday.”

“It’s not that there’s more properties on the market, it’s just there are more going to auction now.

“We have close to 20 per cent of properties listed across the group going to auction, whereas it would usually be under 10 per cent.”

It comes as sellers are putting their homes on the market for as little as one week before going to auction to meet the insatiable demand from buyers.

“Buyers are keen to get amongst it,” Mr Burgin said. “We’re seeing campaigns as short as one week.”

Brisbane couple Matthew Ormond and Paula Brown are taking their five-bedroom house in the sought-after suburb of Camp Hill to auction on Saturday after listing it only 12 days ago to meet the “crazy demand”.

“I think because everyone’s in a rush to buy, we thought if we drag (the campaign) out too long, it might be a bit more of a negative than a positive given the sense of urgency about at the moment,” Mr Ormond said.

The brand new, contemporary home at 63 Akala Street has already had more than 100 groups of people through it and there are still three open homes to go.

Joanna Gianniotis of Place Bulimba, who is marketing the property, said auction campaigns had become shorter because of the looming Easter break, but also because of a fear of missing out.

“Easter is a natural deadline for us and buyers are not wanting to wait, but even before that I found it’s very much FOMO,” Ms Gianniotis said.

“It’s quite amazing, the nervous energy around it is amazing. Buyers are not loyal to a property anymore. They’re like; ‘Can I buy it now?’ They don’t want that lead-up time.”

Ms Gianniotis, who has been in the industry for 20 years, said this weekend’s auction event would be the biggest she had seen during her time at Place.
