HE answered racial abuse with an anti-bullying video posted on YouTube and challenged those who taunted him to remember – “your actions are what counts”.
Chris Tamwoy is just 18 years old, but as a full-time university student, Queensland Rugby League referee, member of the National indigenous Youth Leadership Academy and talented musician, he has achieved more than most do in a lifetime of activity.
For his leadership and his commitment to his local community, he has been nominated for a Pride of Australia Young Leader Medal.
Chris grew up on Badu Island in the Torres Strait before moving to Logan Central to complete his schooling at Beenleigh State High School.
Chris decided the best way to fight the racial abuse he recently encountered was to “fight back with positivity’’ and posted an anti-bullying video on YouTube in response to the taunts.
Influenced by his late grandmother Maulo, Chris aims to share positive stories about his culture as a community leader and a musician. He even opened for the John Butler Trio at this year’s Bluesfest at Byron Bay.
Pride of Australia nominations close next Tuesday, July 29 – with less than a week to go, don’t forget to nominate.
