‘Powerful’: Teen’s art-felt gesture warms hearts of neighbourhood

In a time when connection is valued more than ever, one 11-year-old girl has brought a beacon of hope to her neighbourhood.

In a time when connection is valued more than ever, one ambitious 11-year-old girl has brought a beacon of hope to her neighbourhood.

For two consecutive years, Violet Cann has hosted a home-based art exhibition and competition for the community to enjoy.

A lover of all things art herself, Violet first came up with the concept last year when Covid-19 meant art galleries closed across the country and left many feeling lonely and distressed.

After its huge success, the young innovator decided to make it an annual event and delivered handwritten invitations to her neighbours, encouraging them to get involved again this year.

More than 20 people from the neighbourhood contributed to the exhibition which displayed sketches, paintings, jewellery and homemade lemon marmalade.

Violet’s mum Kristi Cann said the impact of the event was very powerful.

“She has always dreamt big and we’re just so proud of her,” she said.

“When Covid happened, it was quite frightening for a lot of people, so this really gave the community a sense of hope and an outlet … we’ve met neighbours through this event that we never knew before.”

Winners Sherree Halliwell and Alexandra Darby walked away with a certificate, trophy and bragging rights.

The 11-year-old artist plans to make the art exhibition an annual event.
