Port Douglas names captain for FNQ Rugby’s 2020 season

The heartbreak of last year’s elimination final loss will serve as the motivation to push Port Douglas to premiership glory, according to newly named captain Jack Murday.

The heartbreak of last year’s elimination final loss will serve as the motivation to push Port Douglas to premiership glory, according to newly named captain Jack Murday.

The FNQ Rugby’s first training session back since the coronavirus pandemic sidelined community sport culminated in the announcement Murday will lead the team in this year’s abbreviated season.

“It’s an honour,” he said.

“I’ve been playing for the club the past seven years and captained a bit during then, but I’ve always had to fly away for work.

“It’ll be good to dedicate myself to the club for the whole season.”

Coach Travis Gooch said Murday was a man who led with his actions on the field, and the squad would benefit from being able to call upon the backrower every week.

The Reef Raiders reached the finals last year before falling to the powerhouse Barron Trinity Bulls.

It’s a loss which still stings, and will motivate a side featuring many of the men who endured the painful loss.

“We want to build on last year. It was nice to make finals but disappointing to go out the way we did,” Murday said.

Murday said the side would have to start well in a season which kicks off on July 25.

The FNQ Rugby A-grade competition will be without Southside Crusaders.
