Parents rejoice as the multi-day Cairns Children’s Festival promises to keep your kids entertained, for at least a few hours.
On May 17-18 the festival will take over the city, offering a range of free and ticketed events in music, theatre, art and outdoor adventure activities for kids under 12.
This year’s highlights include a stage production of David Walliams’ best-selling book Ratburger at Cairns Performing Arts Centre, an interactive music-making experience with Playable Plants and a roving silent disco by Box Jelly Theatre Company.
ARIA-nominated band Zindzi & The Zillionaires will bring an electrifying blend of RnB, hip hop and rap to The Tanks Art Centre that parents and kids are sure to love.
Cairns mayor Amy Eden said the festival, now in its eleventh year, has continued to bring world-class children’s entertainment to Far North Queensland.
“We know that it is really important for parents and carers to engage with children, to encourage their imagination and creativity,” Ms Eden said.
“That is why every year the specially crafted program is packed full of events and activities that actively engage and inspire.
“I encourage families to come along to the Cairns Children’s Festival and expect to explore, laugh and learn together.”
The packed schedule of events will be held across a range of Cairns venues, including the Cairns Performing Arts Centre (CPAC), the Court House and Mulgrave Galleries, Tanks Arts Centre and the Cairns Botanic Gardens.
“On Saturday, an all-day Picnic on the Lawn at the Court House Gallery is headlined by the Melbourne indie folk stars the Pierce Brothers,” a statement from the festival said.
“As night falls, don your best wizarding robes for A Night at Hogwarts, a magical evening of fun, fantasy, and film featuring an outdoor screening of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
“After a good night’s rest, gear up for another big day on Sunday at the Tanks Arts Centre, enjoy a packed program of entertainment and activities, including Brick Mania, where LEGO lovers of all ages can put their skills to the test.”
