NT police have charged a father and son attempting to transport a huge quantity of a dangerous drug to a remote community. Find out how they were intercepted.

NT Police have charged a father and son after they allegedly attempted to transport 19kg of an illegal drug into a remote NT community.

Detectives from the Drug and Organised Crime Section and members from the Dog Operations Unit intercepted 19kg of kava at Darwin Airport on Wednesday.

The drug was bound for Maningrida.

Police then charged a 17-year-old man and his 53-year-old father with supplying a trafficable quantity of kava and possession a trafficable quantity of kava.

Acting Senior Sergeant Riva Zio condemned the pair’s actions.

“The illegal supply of kava is considered to be very serious offending that has long term financial and social implications on remote communities,” Sergeant Zio said.

“Police actively target these behaviours and will prosecute all persons detected engaging in this unlawful and harmful activity.

“This behaviour works in complete contradiction to the ongoing efforts of police, government and non-government agencies who work tirelessly to ensure the safety of all community members who reside at and visit our regions.”

Several injured during 100-person, alcohol-fuelled remote disturbance

Several people have been injured after a 100-person strong crowd armed with edged weapons had to be dispersed by NT Police at a Tiwi Islands remote community.

Up to 100 people were involved in the alcohol-fuelled disturbance with many wielding a variety of edged weapons.

Police dispersed the crowd at 9pm Wednesday after responding to reports from community members.

Following the disturbance, a local clinic treated a number of individuals for minor injuries.

Commander Kylie Anderson condemned the actions of those involved in the disturbance.

“This behaviour is completely unacceptable,” Commander Anderson said.

“The incident resulted in a number of people requiring medical treatment and was witnessed by children in the area.

“Alcohol fuelled violence will not be tolerated and police will continue to hold offenders to account. The community as a whole needs to stand up and say enough is enough.”

Ram-raided business left with costly damage

About 15 people stormed an Acacia Hills business after its doors were ram raided, leaving it with a $15,000 damage bill.

NT Police said a white Toyota LandCruiser rammed the front doors of the business at 10.30pm Monday.

Police said the group of about 15 people stole electrical goods and drinks from the business.

Officers said a nearby resident heard the impact of the ram-raid and visited the property.

It is believed the group fled the scene when the resident approached.

Police investigations were continuing on Tuesday, and the incident was likely to be handed to Strike Force Trident.

Senior Sergeant Bradley Fox said anyone with information relating to the incident was encouraged to call police on 131444 and quote reference number 10200903.

Top End business owners wake to ‘significant’ property damage

A construction business in Palmerston is the latest to be hit in a long list of crime victims.

NT police received reports of an unlawful entry at BMD on Georgina Crescent, Yarrawonga, at 11pm Saturday.

Officers said unknowns persons unlawfully entered the premises before stealing a silver Toyota Prado.

It is believed they then drove the vehicle through the business’ front gate, causing “significant damage to the perimeter fence”, a police spokesman said.

The suspects and vehicle, which bears NSW registration BMD 040, remain outstanding.

Police investigations are continuing.

Commercial break-ins across the Territory increased 54 per cent in the year up to the end of September, NT Police data shows.

The jump is significantly higher than the figures for any other crime, with a 24 per cent increase for motor vehicle theft coming in second.
