What you said about whether dogs should be allowed in cafes

First there was the dogs on planes debate. Now, there’s controversy about allowing our furry friends in cafes. HAVE YOUR SAY

Now, having our furry friends in cafes has kicked off after a dog-friendly venue was forced to close its doors to canines after a complaint.

Little Genovese in Brisbane posted online that customers’ canines were no longer welcome inside.

“We love you very much, but due to someone making a stupid complaint, sadly we can’t have you inside,” the post said.

“Therefore we need you to be good and sit out the front or right out the back while your hooman orders their coffee.”

Cafe owner Kylie Loch believed the complaint was made about dogs being in areas where food was handled.

Ms Loch said it was disappointing for customers wanting to bring their dog into the cafe, and called for a change to the Food Standards Code.

Under the code, animals are not allowed in areas where food is handled or served. The only loophole is that a business can allow dogs in outdoor dining areas.

The States food Act 2006 is based on the national Food Standards Code, which is administered by local councils.

Readers were quick to jump into the debate, with more than 60 per cent in an online poll voting against allowing dogs in venues.

Some claimed patrons should simply go elsewhere if they don’t like dogs; others suggested the owners are to blame for not controlling their pets.

WHAT YOU SAID

Go elsewhere!

Cheryl

Mobile phone ignorance and doggie mania. We’re walking around in a daze as the world spins by. Carn’t help but think that our selfishness is out of control and every person for themselves thus bringing more conflict and mistrust?

Lance Boyle

“Not everyone likes dogs. Nothing worse when you’re trying to have breakfast and there’s a dog at your feet.”

Fair enough, but why would you go to a cafe that allows dogs? Why make everyone conform to your preferences rather than go elsewhere?

DJ

Leave your dogs at home No need to take them to Bunnings No need to take them to where food is served They are not children or fur babies

Farmerp

Dogs are controlled as much as children

Tony

The complaint is a weak pathetic person. The world is in the mess it’s in because of this sort of small minded behaviour

Saying It As It Is

If you want to have breakfast with your dogs, pack a picnic and go to the park.

No issue from me

Matty J

People are such fools. We will whinge about everything, no tolerance, no patience, it’s about me me me.

Linda

Dogs at people’s feet are OK. I object to them sitting up at the table – either on a chair or on the owner’s lap.

Kevin

Dogs are more well behaved than some people. Relax

Gavin

I love seeing dogs at cafes as long as I can pat them. Get over yourselves you oldies.

Carnbee

I am not a dog lover but around the world dogs are part of life and society. I can cope.

I blame owners

Axel

The ‘problem’ is 99% the dog owners who have not trained their dogs fully and become a nuisance to other patrons of any establishment, the LAW states that any seeing eye dog cannot be refused entry and are exceptionally trained … storm in a tea cup me thinks,

noel

I go to a Cafe to enjoy a meal or a coffee not have to put up with someone dog.

I have 2 dogs but because I like them doesn’t mean everybody else has to.

TM

Dogs belong at home or in the park, not in the cafe. That’s where some children belong also buts that’s another day …

Anne

Good. Dogs do not belong in cafes. Leave them at home. I love dogs, but on the odd occasion I go out to meet friends for coffee I abhor having dogs barking, snapping and snarling at each other all around me.

What a mess

just do it soon

legal nightmare - so who gets sued if:- 1. someone in a cafe slips & falls on dogs #1 or #2. 2. dog bites someone causing injury. Both will happen at some point. Think the cafe owner will need to pay a higher insurance premium.

Richard

Wow. Passive aggressive owner! the change isn’t because of an anonymous complaint, there’s no point blaming and trying to shame them. This is solely because the owner was breaking the law, and they got busted and didn’t want to take responsibility for it themselves.

Simon

I avoid any food establishment that allows animals in around tables.

Rosslyn

The cafe has banned dogs due to not following health guidelines. Not because one person complained (Mr Rosslyn)
