Far North Queensland residents evacuated due to flooding

Political pointscoring or looking out for Queensland?

Opposition leader Steven Miles’ attack on Premier David Crisafulli over his handling of the ongoing wild weather impacting North Queensland has divided opinion.

On Saturday Mr Miles doubled down by accusing the Premier of being “too lazy” to do his job properly.

As parts of the state continue to brace for potentially life-threatening rain and floods, the Labor leader took aim at a Premier “out of his depth”, arguing he had failed to properly mobilise the state’s disaster management group.

The Premier received a briefing from emergency services at Kedron on Friday afternoon, however Police and Emergency Services Minister Dan Purdie and Local Government and Disaster Recovery Minister Ann Leahy did not appear to be present.

“The Premier should have set up the Queensland Disaster Management Committee before this storm system hit Far North Queensland and well before it hit North Queensland,” Mr Miles said.

“Preparation before a disaster can be the difference between life and death and David Crisafulli has neglected his duties in preparing Queenslanders for this disaster.

“This summer has been more about holidays for David Crisafulli and his Disaster Recovery Minister and Disaster Management Minister than preparing Queenslanders for these inevitable weather events.”

A spokeswoman for the Premier rubbished the claims and said Mr Crisafulli briefed the disaster management group on Friday morning.

Readers piled into the conversation, many insisting Mr Miles needs to roll up his sleeves and help before he worries about political points.

Others said Labor had its chance to do things differently, while some claimed it was an ugly topic.

WHAT YOU SAID

What a joke

Cynclic

Remember being on holidays around the time of the destructive Gold Coast and Scenic Rim storms in December 2023, Opposition Leader Miles? And not long after Cyclone Jasper hit? Within a month of you being made acting premier too.

Brad

To be fair … Miles is an authority on being out of one’s depth.

Peter

Advice to Giggles. Keep mouth closed and let people think that you are a fool rather than speak and remove all doubt.

John from Northgate

Miles should not go down the Dutton and Angus Taylor permanent outrage track. White noise

Lynette

So let me get this right. If Giggles was still the Premier this rain wouldn’t have happened. Is that what he expects us to believe? His mere presence is enough to stop the rain? What happened the last time they had massive rain up north? He was the Premier then wasn’t he? That’s right, roads were flooded, landslides blocked roads for weeks.

Now’s not the time

Patrick

Miles. Politicises everything. Even Queenslanders facing a flooding event.

Lisa

Note for Giggles: While we appreciate that turning every severe weather event into an over dramatised media event that was more about showcasing politicians than it was actually helping with anything was (and is) a standard Labor strategy, the public hated it. Let’s leave Crisafulli and his team to do it their way – and less grandstanding is a good start.

Elizabeth

Typical Labor. People don’t want or need a bunch of bureaucrats being paid big money telling everyone to stay safe.

Evosh

Maybe Stephen Miles should explain to North Queenslanders how he would’ve stopped over a metre of rain falling in the last few days with no end in sight. Good luck controlling Mother Nature.

Labor had its chance

Gaz

Labor has lost the right to criticise any of the LNP’s actions for the next 10 years.

Phil McCoffee

OK Mr Miles, let’s talk about preparation for floods in north Qld. How about the highways that get cut off when it rains. It was your government that didn’t flood proof the main arterial roads in north Qld, etc, etc etc …

Keeping the Whigs Honest

Coming from the bloke who went to Byron Bay during the COVID-19 over-reaction by the Palaszczuk government …

Ian

Go away MR Miles. You lost. Sore loser. Never had a plan but that goes with never having a real job.
