He’s been Premier for just days but Steven Miles’ tenure has already stirred the passions – good, bad and ugly – of Queenslanders.
Annastacia Palaszczuk’s shock decision to step down from the top job meant her deputy was the natural successor.
Mr Miles’ rise, however, has not always been a smooth one.
Just last Friday, he was in Dubai aboard Australian billionaire Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest’s green ammonia-fuelled ship the Green Pioneer for a star-studded gathering headlined by US climate envoy John Kerry.
As the state’s now-incoming premier mingled and sipped on red wine, he was completely unaware that 14,000km away his boss Annastacia Palaszczuk was preparing to resign.
Mr Miles knew her leadership was under pressure.
He had, after all, been neck-deep over recent weeks in a campaign orchestrated by union heavyweight Gary “Blocker” Bullock to bring to an end Ms Palaszczuk’s near-11-year leadership of the Queensland Labor Party.
He also knew that Mr Bullock and state Labor president John Battams had told Ms Palaszczuk earlier in the week that she should consider her future for the sake of the party, with “Blocker” at least indicating he no longer backed her leadership.
Enter Mr Miles.
But, ominously, his ascent sparked fierce debate from Queenslanders.
Alarmingly for a man days into his role, Mr Miles trailed opposition leader David Crisafulli 13 per cent to 87 per cent from about 8000 voters when it came to preferred Premier.
Then there was the backlash from readers, many questioning if Mr Miles will be another union puppet.
Others said past performance indicated he simply wasn’t up for the job.

WHAT YOU SAID
Labor has no hope
The Elephant
If you’re still thinking about voting labor at next year’s election, consider this: you’ll be continuing the undemocratic mess we’ve been suffering for years with union bosses running Queensland. Knowing this after the backroom skulduggery of the past few days and still voting Labor is like knowing someone is raiding your bank account and then depositing your life saving in it.
Judith
Unions in total control of the Labor Party. And the socialist element. How disgusting for the taxpaying Queenslanders. Out the door in 24. That is the major change that needs to happen.
smith, winston
Unions run Queensland Labor. They have no interest in what is good for Queenslanders. Their interest is purely around keeping themselves in power and hence at the food trough.
Good luck, Miles
Robert
Come on giggles you have had nearly three days and we still have ramping, teen crime, lack of police, ambulance, firefighters and a bad education system pick your game up if your bosses allow you
Mollie
What about youth crime and the failing health system … not a word. Giggles had his chance to address issues when he was Health minister and didn’t. Can’t wait to see how he will fix these issues now!
Andrew
So is Mr Bullock our new Premier?
Margaret
Miles is the best thing to happen to the LNP. Now keep your powder dry & throw everything at the ALP/Green/ Union idiots come election time next year.
Big Tony
Faced with the enormity of the job yesterday he was like a deer in the headlights. A bumbling mess … only a matter of time until Fentiman gets her man!
Rosie
Trad still pulling strings in the Labor Party, LNP needs to be all over that snippet.
Panic stations, people!

The only true way to finally fix the state mess snd save everyone a fortune is abolish all the states. Make them all regions. Have a QLD regional council overseeing the Local councils. All strings and $ are ruled by one govt, one treasury and one set of laws – the only “politicians” are in Canberra. based in Canberra.
CT
We need an opposition who want to manage our beautiful state, not career politicians who are happy to do nothing for Qld and still be paid well.
Karen
Queensland is becoming a joke to the rest of the nation
Daryl
You should never delve too deeply into the making of politics or sausages.
