Taking care of business or taking the mickey?

Revelations that Queensland taxpayers paid for two jets to fly the Premier, Police Minister and the new Police Commissioner across the state has drawn the ire of many..

Making a series of crime announcements just days after the government’s landmark emissions bill was passed, Steven Miles, security and his staff took one jet from Brisbane to Townsville and on to Cairns on Monday, before returning to Townsville, then Hervey Bay and Brisbane on Tuesday.

A second plane took Police Minister Mark Ryan and newly appointed Police Commissioner Steve Gollschewski on an identical route minutes apart, with the trio stopping at each port on their approximately 2800km trip to make a series of crime pledges.

While the government later defended its use of the two planes, information on the type of jets used show they hire out privately for about $6500 per hour.

News sparked anger among readers, some claiming it’s the latest in a long line of bungles from Labor.

Others, though, insisted there is nothing to see here.

WHAT YOU SAID

Who cares?

Maree

You might be surprised how popular and well liked the Premier is. I was often amazed by the near worshipping of the ex-Premier by some of my friends. They ignore the negative stuff as if our premiers can do no wrong simply because of their place in politics. Then again, someone asked me recently who our premier is. A lot of people are simply not interested.

Matthew

I don’t object to the separate flights. Perhaps there was a reason. I do object to our State and Federal Leaders travelling 2000km to spend 10 minutes making an announcement before heading off. They could at least arrange some meetings with locals to make use of their trip but that would entail mixing with the great unwashed. I guess that is asking too much of our politicians.

Ross

It is normal practice not to put all important people in Government on the same plane.

Cal

I thought Queensland government owned its own Jet?

Clearly

Least it was for official business and not to attend a private function like LNP folk typically use it for.

We need answers

Jennifer

Again? Why can’t they all fly in the same one? Please explain.

Sandi

We need feet on the ground to fight crime in QLD. Obviously that’s a concept yet to be grasped at a senior level.

david

“Two Jets” seems to be the new Labor mantra. There is no limit to how much they will spend to keep us safe.

Boswoz

So Miles has begun his election campaign using taxpayers money. I thought that was illegal. Oh hang on, this is Labor, the rules don’t apply to them.

ColinP12

Why do the staff have to go, they have mobile phones and laptops to call them

if needed. They stayed overnight so how much for all there accommodation.

ScubaSteve

Absolutely pathetic. Every Queenslanders blood should be boiling.

Tom

Poor media/diary planning does not excuse the use of expensive private jets over suitable cheap commercial flights. Disgusting and out of touch entitlement.

Susan

Just snouts in the trough. No acceptable excuses for using two planes. Leave the hangers on behind.

James

Appalling, arrogant behaviour that shows just how careless and incompetent this government is.

Western Rod

A blatant electioneering junket to try and shore up support for their labor stodges in Townsville area at our expense

Time for Miles to go

Bernie

This clearly demonstrates that Giggles Miles and his union mates are way past their use by dates. Like anything else past it’s use by date, they need to be thrown out as soon as possible before they cause anymore heartache and pain.

Paul

Commercial flights to do the same trip are plentiful and should have been the choice. Miles is completely clueless and not a leader’s shoe lace. Can’t wait to see the permanent grin wiped from his face come October.

MargieQ

Just remember this at the upcoming election. Time to vote them out.

greg

I was their yesterday and Miles was not smiling at a very small press conference 3 pollies 2 police and a very cranky business man who attacked Miles for about 3 minutes on youth crime. Miles looked scared and never offered a word. This person should not be premier of this State he is an embarrassing clumsy fool.
