Blues claim Game 1 on enemy territory

Daly Cherry-Evans’ time in Maroon may be coming to an end … and several teammates could join him in the exit.

That’s the forecast from many Queensland fans following the opening State of Origin encounter, won convincingly 18-6 by NSW at Suncorp Stadium.

Queensland were left staring down the barrel of back-to-back series defeats after Blues duo Payne Haas and Zac Lomax delivered a one-two punch to sink the “flat” Maroons.

Pressure is building on Queensland coach Billy Slater after he watched the impotent Maroons crash to consecutive defeats against the Blues at Suncorp Stadium for the first time in 27 years.

But before 52,483, the unnerving reality for Queensland is that a sky-blue dynasty beckons unless the Maroons, trailing 1-0, can save the series in the return bout at Perth’s Optus Stadium on June 18.

“I feel pretty flat about our performance,” Slater lamented.

“We didn’t see the best of this Queensland team and that’s what I’m disappointed about.

“You have to make it happen and we weren’t prepared to make it happen.”

So what changes need to be made?

Readers were quick to point the finger at captain Cherry-Evans, who at 36 became the oldest ever player in the arena. More than half of voters in an online poll said his time is up.

Many also claimed NSW was simply too strong, while some reserved praise for some of the new faces.

WHAT YOU SAID

Poor all around

Son

Slater V Fittler, great! Both inexperienced. Slater came out on top. However, against Maguire and Daley, who are much more experienced, Billy was clueless. It’s time to bring Benny back.

John

Like the old cupboard clean out, QLD needs to refresh. If Slater loses the series, he’s gone too.

James

Defence line waited for NSW all game. No urgency, Backs had more hit ups than forwards. Poor start, let NSW halves run. Not a real Qld performance. They needed to spend a day with choppy. Ref had some questionable calls. Not a great spectacle. Worst Origin in memory.

Peter

Boring game

Looks like a dud series

Ally

It was like watching the broncos. No forwards taking the ball forward – Carrigan and Holmes should be dropped. Let the new 3 have a fair go.

Cheryl

It all starts in the middle and we were eaten up. That allowed Cleary and his mates to have fun. I thought Grant was poor and Holmes as usual a speed bump. Munster looked a little off key. Carrigan for all his work wouldn’t hurt a lettuce leaf in his tackles?

Hugo

That has to have been one of the worst team performances for Qld’s backs in years.

Change the spine

John@Trademark

The right hand side did not look to be playing as a team, no fluent attack and no team effort in defence. It was a shambles.

As for the QLD 5/8 and halfback, the performances were very poor. All night the Qld line attack was spiralling bombs to To’o, who was good under the high ball as usual.

Wallace

Grant was abysmal and you could see from the amount of professional fouls he got chipped for that he isn’t up the standard. Munster had one good series 5 years and is still getting picked because of that. He was terrible asndyswwmwd more interested on putting dog shots on Liam Martin.

Glenn

Munster keeps doing this lollipop kicks when QLD was attacking which is useless. Just do a grubber kick in the in goal or do a proper bomb so that QLD can aim for another set of 6.

Peter

Experts will tell you that the Spine is where games are won and lost. I wouldn’t give Qlds 1,6,7 and 9 any more than a rating of 5. They just couldn’t get any traction and go forward.

Trell's MAGIC pass 'as good as it gets!'

Time for DCE to go

Gary

Time for DCE to retire gracefully.

Scoop

DCE, you are the weakest link, time to go!

Paul

Time for DCE to retire. Bring in some young blood

John Odgers

DCE has wound the clock back … back to before he was a footballer.

Some stood out

Dragons22

Val made some mistakes but at least he was trying to get involved.

Terry

Alfie was Queensland’s best on the field.

Tom Harding

Tommy Deardon needs to be the 5/8
