'Gone in the next election': Miles government has 'delivered nothing'

A desperate Labor is thinking long-term – but it seems many Queenslanders have their gaze firmly fixed on October.

That much is clear after it was revealed despondent Labor insiders believe it is now better for the party’s long-term future to lose in key regional seats at the state election in a bid to rise from the ashes in four years’ time.

And it is spiralling crime rates in the state’s north that appears to have left voters so disenfranchised, with many ready to toss local MPs out to try something new – even if they’re not yet convinced the other side’s plans will work.

Party sources said the die is cast for the government in Townsville – and across most of regional Queensland – and a desperate strategy was necessary to keep the damage of the swings to a minimum.

YouGov polling in July revealed the LNP has extended its two-party-preferred lead over the government by one point to 57-43 per cent – marking a 10-point swing since the 2020 election.

This points to a potential loss of 23 seats for Labor, including seven ministers, and all bar one of its seven seats in North and Far North Queensland.

The strategy was now to sandbag key seats that Labor could win back in 2028, and keep the swings in check.

Readers, though, were quick to pile on, insisting they are very much focused on ditching Labor at October’s election.

“This is no surprise. They have been creating that much debt and problems for the next government to deal with they won’t be able to do much,” Paul wrote.

WHAT YOU SAID

I know the problem

timothy

revolving door is the problem. need for incentives for indigenous kids to attend school? financial for parents or vouchers for parents for groceries or fuel etc.

Susan

People need to be aware where preferences are being distributed to so that they not electing Labor via the minority parties, so that the current government is not re-elected.

Warren

all.politicians need to be held accountable for the mess our power has become. sitting on endless resources and we pay more that other countries who buy our resources. apparently only state in world apart from.nsw & victoria who don't have a gas reservation policy

Paul

This is no surprise. They have been creating that much debt and problems for the next government to deal with they won’t be able to do much. These clowns will then say that nothing has been fixed to try and get back in to government in 2028

Labor’s a mess

Richard

So this is what will happen … Labor lose badly, Crisifulli has 1 term, Labor spends another 20 years in power, and blames their ineptitude on Crisifulli (or Campbell Newman). That’s their normal playbook.

Ian

Labor must lose – not just in this State’s election, but Federally as well. I – for one – am tired of having the opinions and values of the few, imposed on me day after day after day.

Adele

Labor at all levels deserve to lose because they don’t follow the wishes of the majority.

Looking for the Truth

So the Labor pollies are now beginning to realise that they have stuffed the state and now want to lose the election so that they can pull the old Labor con trick in 4 years time of blaming the LNP for everything that is wrong.

Maria

So now it’s best for Labour to lose the election because they can’t fix the mess they have created in Queensland and leave it for the next government to deal with it so they can come back in 4 years to do it all again. DON’T THINK SO. It’ll take decades to fix up your mess Labour.

Time to go

NightStalker

There will be an abundance of ‘village idiots’ looking for jobs after the next state elections … most of them won’t even make it to job interview stage! Starting from giggles miles down!

Gaye

I’ve stopped listening to the current government & can’t wait to vote them out. If I ever see or hear Grace, Smiles, De Brenni or Shannon again, then I will again stop listening. They have ruined this great state with their self fulfilling antics.

MrBiggles

Don’t just vote against Labor and then vote for the Greens as that will be just as disastrous for the state.

Kerry

Can’t wait for election night TV viewing in October. This night will have a bigger audience than the Olympic Games.
