Brisbane’s 2032 Games may be years away but the issues continue to arise.
Queensland’s peak housing and homelessness body warned of a major house price surge following the Olympics, urging the government to include affordable homes in its 2032 legacy plan.
QShelter acting chief executive Jackson Hills said capital cities hosting the Games had a track record of failing to build or convert athletes villages into affordable housing.
He warned the state government to not repeat the mistake.
“Research from firms like PRD also shows us that previous Olympics and Paralympics have caused considerable spikes in house prices in host cities, particularly within a 10-kilometre radius of stadiums,” he said.
Of the total 9000 built within Olympic Park, less than 200 were offered to vulnerable residents at cheap rent rates, Mr Hills said, while promises to convert the East London athletes village from the 2012 Games went unfulfilled.
Mr Hills listed several policy initiatives he said would help leverage the 2032 Games to improve housing outcomes.
It comes after the Opposition this week demanded the government match its funding commitment for homelessness services as outlined in the former Homes for Queenslanders plan.
Readers were quick to pile into the debate; some claimed it was time to cancel the Games.
Others insisted there were wider problems that need to be solved, while some said politics are to blame.

WHAT YOU SAID
We have issues
Tim
Built 114 000 houses last year. Migration 600 000. Not saying stop migration just make sure there are enough homes for them. Not enough will always create higher prices.

The Commonwealth Games were supposed to lead to a windfall for people who owned short-term rental accommodation on the Gold Coast. The Games made absolutely no difference. Making predictions 7 years out and acting on them is risky.

There wont be any tent people by the time the games role around. The State Govt (whichever party is in office) and the BCC will purge the parks moving the park campers to old 3 star aged motels or WellCamp for the duration.
PR
Take pity on renters, Cancel the Games.

Albanese importing 600,000 migrants a years up from 170,000 per year Pre Covid this weak Leader is responsible for rental shortages and housing costs exploding.

Public housing has zero to do with the Olympics and Olympic expenditure should be for just that and a return on outlays. No government should spend hundreds of $millions on stadiums only to then devalue the investment by surrounding them with cheap housing.
Tex
the Olympics the real problem is now labor has created so many major issues and the largest disaster to come the Olympics
commonsense to me
Couple of facts. Peter Beattie was premier and Robert schwarten was housing minister when the Labor government dissolved Qld Housing Commission in 2004. QHC provided cheap housing for those less fortunate and this has been a major cause of present lesser fortunate housing situation.
Fact fact and fact
Just build more

Housing should not depend on the Games. We need housing now, if not yesterday.

No poor agents in my area. They all drive Mercs and Beamers.

The same scaremongering took place leading up to Expo 88. Last time I checked, the less fortunate still congregate around South Brisbane, Highgate Hill & West End over 30 years later.

Host the Olympics and turf the poor people out in the street.
