What you said about fixing the Bruce Hwy after triple fatal crash

Calls continue to grow louder for urgent upgrades to the Bruce Highway following the latest fatal crash.

Three confirmed dead after horror NQ bus crash

Road safety advocates said barriers and wider median strips could help prevent incidents like Sunday’s deadly bus crash on a stretch of the highway described as one of the worst sections of road in the country by the region’s mayor.

Three people were killed and dozens injured when a Greyhound bus allegedly drifted onto the wrong side of the highway, colliding with a caravan being towed by a four-wheel-drive.

The section of the road, north of Bowen, had a safety rating of just two to three stars, as revealed in the Help Our Highway campaign in April.

It has painted median strips with little to no road shoulder.

Whitsundays Mayor Ry Collins said the stretch of highway was “definitely a section that needs further investment”.

Readers were quick to jump on the issue.

Some declared while further upgrades are important, they simply won’t happen.

Others, though, said it should be top priority given the ongoing road issues.

WHAT YOU SAID

Not gonna happen

N

While it would be nice to see dual lanes both ways, it’s not going to happen in my life time. I drive this stretch twice a week Townsville to Bowen and it is not that bad.

Pazza

I have said it before and I will say it again......you could literally have the world’s best road with brand new tarmac, 10 lanes in either direction, flat and with no visibility issues\distractions and there would still be accidents.

Jen

I went up north to Cairns in 2022 the highway way beautiful compared to the goat track it was when I lived up in the region in 1970s and 80s.

Maybe people need to learn how to drive.

Qld roads away from major cities and north of Gympie are rated from average to dismal. In general the Bruce is average and if you drive according to the conditions of the day and don’t get into an “autopilot” mode of driving remaining aware of all changes in the road and traffic ahead it is trafficable.

We need change!

What the voters of regional Qld need to do if they want some improvements in the highway is to ensure they extract strong commitments from the non Alp parties to spend various amounts to fund specific projects and then unload all sitting Alp members in their areas because Alp are simply not listening and don’t care.

Gavin

As usual the government only focus on SEQ and don’t care about the rest of Qld

smith, winston

We should thank Dr Giggles and his Transport Minister. They have done nothing for years.

W

Both federal and state governments need to bite the bullet and build a multi lane divided national highway We have suffered with this third world goat track for far too long.

Rodney

While all the money is being spent in the great southeast there is nothing left from Gympie up. Have just travelled the Bruce Highway from Mackay down and it’s bad.

There are solutions

Looking for the Truth

Can somebody tell me why I am paying 49.6 c per Ltr on petrol and where the money goes, because I thought it was to be spent on road upgrades.

Over this

All that money that was spent on cross river rail should have been spent on our roads

The cross river rail is a waste of money

Tryfan

$Billions are being spent on a completely unnecessary Gold Coast Light Rail while there is a desperate need for improving the Bruce Highway. Get your priorities right Pollies!

Paul

Why is it that in NSW the road between Tweed Heads and Sydney is double lane in both directions and yet in Queensland nearly all of the highway is single lane?

Tetters

The Bruce isn’t in the city so it is a long way down the list. If it got as much priority as the cross-river rail many danger spots would have been eliminated by now.
