And the winner is … Brisbane.
On Wednesday afternoon in pandemic-ridden Tokyo, Queensland and Brisbane in particular will be the hottest place on the planet as it is named as the host of the 2032 Olympics.
It’s been a long and at times arduous process and there will be nobody happier on that day than premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and AOC boss John Coates.
They have lived the dream of Australia once again hosting an Olympic Games and destiny now beckons.
Of course, this is not just about two weeks of sport in July, 2032. This is about redefining Queensland, both physically and emotionally.
It’s about building the southeast Queensland of tomorrow, making us the envy of the world.
It’s about giving young Australians a goal, of striving to represent their country at a home Olympics.
It’s about turning Brisbane into a true world city, and building the roads and train lines to accommodate our growing population
Once announced, there is much work to do and there will be challenges and disappointments along the way.
But the prize at the end of the rainbow will be an extraordinary transformation of Queensland’s spirit and commitment to excellence.
This is the game changer we could only have dreamt about.
