It’s the great scrub turkey versus dogs off leash controversy dividing a close-knit inner city community.
Tensions are mounting in Kangaroo Point after moves by Greens councillor Jono Sri to install a dog off leash area in a local riverside park, James Warner Park.
Neighbouring residents are not happy and there’s now suggestions that pro-off leash advocates are attempting to drive wildlife away from the park. There are even questions being posed over Cr Sri’s community consultation methods.
The park sits on the bank of the Brisbane River and is home to nesting scrub turkeys. However, locals have a video which shows a group of people driving the curlew scrub turkeys away from the area.
There are definitely bird noises in the video and people roaming the park with torches. Those against the off leash dog park say they have raised concerns with Cr Sri about the impact of dogs chasing scrub turkeys.
They are also concerned that the off leash area will be just 15 metres from some apartments, citing noise and smell issues.
Cr Sri has tried unsuccessfully on three occasions to have council resume part or all of the park for dogs.
Concerns have already been raised about dogs chasing birds. Any move to dedicate an off leash park for dogs would need the support of full council.
Sources say Cr Sri – at this point – doesn’t have the numbers, although resident surveys are being conducted to convince councillors that it has community support.
